TItle: You’re Not Building a Website, You’re Building Inclusion

While accessibility for our public school’s websites is a legal requirement, it’s also an exciting opportunity. Uncovering the potential of this opportunity energizes and empowers us by giving meaning to our work. In the conference keynote address, Lynn Wehrman, President and Founder of WeCo Accessibility Services, guides us through an exploration of those opportunities. As the leader of a ground-breaking company, founded and run by digital technologists, all of whom live with disabilities, Lynn will bring to life the positive impacts of website accessibility for our students, parents and beyond.

One of the first accessible communications specialists for government, as well as living with and growing up in a family with generations of cognitive disabilities, enriches Lynn’s talks with a tapestry of real life examples that help you understand the power you hold to include others in your work. Prepare to come away inspired and ready to make sustainable, and meaningful digital accessibility happen for your school’s site.

This talk will include:
  • Lynn’s own journey to grasp digital accessibility in a government role
  • Beyond just blindness: a brief primer of the disabilities people live and how they impact computer use
  • How accessible websites include and empower others
  • Ways accessibility improves user experience for everyone
  • Weaving the energy of accessibility into your daily work:
  • Knowing when to update for accessibility and when to start over

Website Platform Showcase (10 minutes each)
Every New York City school’s website must be accessible to people with disabilities by December 2020. It’s part of our agreement with the US DOE’s Office of Civil Rights.  But which platform is the best one for your school website?

In the “Website Platform Showcase,” product experts will present highlights of their platforms, how they think their platform will help your school make your website accessible, and what makes each platform unique. You’ll have the chance to add your comments and questions for each product expert during the interactive reflection part of the presentation.

The following website platforms will be presenting:

  • Blackboard / Schoolwires
