Bio
Andrew Marcinek is currently the Chief Information Officer at Worcester Academy in Worcester, MA. Most recently, Andrew served as the first Chief Open Education Advisor for the US Department of Education. As Open Education Advisor at the U.S. Department of Education, Andrew focused on expanding and accelerating the adoption of open education policies within the Department, encouraged the expansion of such policies across the federal government and supported initiatives that dramatically increased the curation and sharing of open educational materials by educators throughout the country. As part of this campaign, Andrew organized a White House event that brought together EdTech companies, district and state leaders, and nonprofits. This event helped launch a national movement called #GoOpen that supported PreK-12 school districts in the expansion of implementing openly-licensed educational materials, the development of better discovery and curation tools from Amazon, Microsoft, and Edmodo, and guidance for strategic planning and sustainability.

Andrew previously served as the Director of Technology for Grafton Public Schools and a blogger for Edutopia. Additionally, he served as an Instructional Technology Specialist for Burlington High School and helped lead one of the first large scale iPad initiatives in the country. This work was recognized globally by Apple and awarded Burlington High School with the Apple Distinguished School award in 2012. Andrew has designed and created a digital and information literacy course that focuses on Web 2.0 applications, Google Apps for Education, Information Literacy, and Digital Citizenship. Outside the classroom, Andrew has organized four edcamps and presented at various conferences around the country. Based on his current and previous work at Edutopia, Andrew published his first book in 2014 with Corwin Press, The 1:1 Roadmap: Setting the course for innovation in education and his second book, The Future of Learning is Open, will be released later this year by Dave Burgess Publishing Co.
